    PLCAA Regional Seminars Emphasize
    Applicator Safety and Risk Management

Applicator Safety is the focus of the 1987 PLCAA Summer Regional Seminar Series, continuing the theme that began with "Applicator Safety and Environmental Awareness Week" June 1-5, 1987.

Early afternoon workshops for management cover topics of risk awareness and risk management. Representatives of state and local regulatory agencies and public health officials team up to discuss both a managers responsibilities and solutions.

Early evening begins with a tour of indoor and outdoor exhibits of supplies and equipment for lawn care and safety practice. Applicators and technicians are then invited to test their safe practices with demonstrations of spill containment, vehicle driver safety, application device calibration and pesticide handling.

During the June 11, 1987 Atlanta Seminar, the start of the series, participants found the approach very practical and critical to the safe operation of professional lawn care services. A complete schedule of dates and city locations is available from the Professional Lawn Care Association of America. The cost for attendance is $25.00 for Owners/Managers and $10.00 each for Applicators/Technicians. PLCAA non-member firms are charged a slightly higher fee. For more information, call 1-800-458-3466.

    National Arborist Association Launches
    Industry Improvement Campaign

The National Arborist Association (NAA) has launched a campaign to help commercial arborists achieve more professionalism and success in business.

The nationwide program is built around encouraging arborists to take advantage of the many training and safety programs offered through membership in the NAA.

According to Robert Felix, executive vice president, the goal is to help each arborist improve the business end of the tree care business. Programs developed by the NAA can solve many of the business problems faced by company owners and managers.

"The business end of tree care has dramatically changed in the past decade," says Felix. "Commercial arboriculture has become a complex profession. New laws and regulations affect worker safety, training, and pesticide application. More than ever before, arborists need help in understanding government regulations, training workers and managing the business for success."

The 50-year-old National Arborist Association brings together leading firms, large and small, who practice recognized methods of tree care: diagnosis, pruning, pest management, fertilizing, injection and transplanting. NAA is the recognized voice of arboriculture in Congress and the regulatory agencies in Washington, D.C. The NAA regularly testifies for the needs of the professional arborist.

    NAA Membership Requirements Changed

NAA president, William Owen, says, "Our members felt that we can better meet the needs of the entire arboricultural profession by inviting all commercial arborists to apply for membership."

Changes in membership requirements now make it easier for a commercial arborist to join. "It's quite simple," says Owen. "There is no application fee, and dues for the first year are prorated on a quarterly basis with a maximum of $175. Commercial arborists need only to complete an application and provide copies of licenses or certifications as may be required in their state and certificates of insurance."

Felix says that the Association has developed training seminars, educational clinics, operating ratio surveys, standards of practice booklets, newsletters and over 30 training and safety programs. "All are focussed on commercial arboriculture and are available to members at a greatly reduced cost," he says.

"We have two home study programs which are designed for the arborist who is interested in learning more about the profession," he continues. "We recently completed a home study program for foremen (crew leaders). This program focuses on the people person abilities foremen need to manage crews and work with customers."

For more information about membership in the National Arborist Association, contact: Patricia Felix, association administrator, National Arborist Association, 174 Route 101, Bedford, NH 03102, or call: (603) 472-2255.

    CLCA: New CLT Logo

The new logo was designed by Micheyl Hannon, CLCA communications specialist. The leaves stand for Knowledge, Skill, and Versatility. General NewsPresentation Folders Available for CLCA Members

Members of the California Landscape Contractors Association can now purchase color presentation folders from their trade group. The folders are designed to hold marketing, estimating, and bidding materials for presentation to potential clients.

The folders are made from glossy, high-quality card stock. The front cover features an attractive design containing several landscape scenes. The CLCA emblem appears on the inside with the following words: "To protect your landscape investment be sure your contractor is a member." Next to the emblem are slots for contractors to insert their business cards. The back cover tells consumers that CLCA consists of members who "joined together to improve their technique and broaden their knowledge of the latest advances in the landscape industry."

Sharon McGuire, CLCA executive director, said the folders are intended to "impress consumers with the contractor's good taste."

"Quality clients are caught by quality printing," she explained. "They assume that a landscape contractor's work is as tasteful and professional as his printed materials. Our folders should create that crucial impression."

"Producing folders of comparable quality is out of the question for the average contractor," she continued. "It's way too expensive. But CLCA, by taking advantage of economies of scale, is able to design and print them for a reasonable price."

CLCA members can purchase the folders "at cost" for one dollar apiece. To request an order form, call or write CLCA at 2226 K Street, Sacramento, CA, 95816, (916) 448-CLCA.

American Association of Nurserymen Participating in Pro Show 87

American Association of Nurserymen (AAN), in conjunction with the National Landscape Association, has announced its support of and participation in the first annual Professional Landscape Contracting, Turf and Grounds Maintenance Expo (Pro Show 87). AAN will sponsor four educational seminars in conjunction with the tradeshow to be held Wednesday-Friday, November 18-20, at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.

"We are extremely excited about showcasing AAN's seminars and being part of this promising new event," said AAN Managing Director Lawrence Scovotto, CAE.

The AAN Computer Fair is planned for Tuesday, November 17, 9 a.m.Ã5 p.m., at the Dallas Convention Center. This Pro Show preview will offer strategies for computerization within the landscape industry. Included will be a panel discussion of owners and office managers who will explain how they chose their software and equipment and what they would do differently given the benefit of hindsight. The audience will have ample time for questions, and the program will end with demonstrations of several systems, including one programmed for computer-assisted landscape design. Leading the Computer Fair will be AAN Computer Consultant Woodrow F. Dick.

On Wednesday, November 18, the AAN Wage-Hour Seminar will provide an in-depth look at complying with labor laws. This seminar, scheduled 9 a.m,-5 p.m., is a "must" for all nursery business owners and their financial managers. Instructor Kenneth R. Morefield, AAN's Wage-Hour Consultant, has spent more than 45 years in the field of labor law. He has been consulting nursery businesses on this vital topic for more than 16 years. "There is probably no law which affects so many persons, employer and employee alike, and yet is so widely misunderstood," commented Morefield. "During the Pro Show 87 seminar we will look at the salient points of the law and clarify those which cause the most trouble for employers."

On Thursday, November 19, Eric P. McCarty will lead two AAN seminars. From 9 a.m. until noon he will address the challenge of how to increase landscape or maintenance service sales by meeting customer needs.
