That Right POC -
Point of Connection

Every once in a while I have an irrigation contractor that tells me the irrigation system he just installed is not performing as designed. The sprinklers just don't have the radius they are supposed to and the impulse heads just dribble. The POC (point of connection) is generally the cause of this type of complaint.

In a residence, tapping into the water source after the pressure regulator or at a hose bib has to be two of the worst POC's from which to work. The problem with tapping in down line from the pressure regulator is that the unit is preset for indoor plumbing needs. This pressure is generally not adequate for proper irrigation system operation. In addition, any tampering with the pressure regulator to increase the pressure could result in serious damage to indoor plumbing fixtures.

The trickiest POC is the dreaded hose bib because its the most accessible. It is also deceptive. The hose bib could give you a pressure reading of 70 PSI when you connect your pressure gauge, but it could lack the volume you need to supply your valves... and volume is what you need at this point.

Before I go any further, let me explain the relationship of volume and pressure. What happens when you fill a funnel with water? The water comes out of the nozzle of the funnel fast and hard. This is because there is more pressure at the bottom of the funnel than at the top. The bigger the funnel's cup the faster and harder the water comes out the nozzle. With this in mind you need to locate the equivalent in the water source for your POC. This means locating the water source with the highest constant pressure available. This can be found in the line between the meter and the pressure regulator.

In a residential area this line is generally of a copper or PVC material from 3/4" to 1" in diameter. In some new housing tracts a poly—pipe in tube sizes is being used with more frequency. In any case, a successful and simple POC can be made with a pressure coupling.

After making a connection at this point you should test the pressure with a pressure gauge. This will give you a more accurate reading and a truer idea of the kind of water pressure that is available. Following this rule of thumb you could lay out a more efficient system for your customer.

El problema es casi siempre lo mismo se equivicarón, en sus calculos de punto de conección, quiero decir, no calcularon que tanta presion de agua hiban a necesitar para operar su sistemo de riego;

Bueno ya aclarando este sentido, vamos a, solucionar este problema, digamos que vamos a instalar, un sistema de riego en una casa residencia;
